Bovine vs Marine Collagen: Which Type Is Right for You?

06 August 2026· By BioBodyBoost Team· 4 min read

The practical differences: bovine collagen comes from cattle hide and bone and supplies collagen types I and III; marine collagen comes from fish skin and scales and is almost entirely type I. For halal buyers, marine is the simpler choice — fish requires no ritual slaughter, while bovine collagen is only halal if the cattle were slaughtered Islamically.

Where each type comes from

Bovine collagen is extracted from the hides, bones and connective tissue of cattle — by-products of the beef industry. It is the cheapest collagen to produce at scale, which is why most budget collagen powders are bovine.

Marine collagen is extracted from fish skin and scales, usually from species like cod, pollock or tilapia — again a by-product, this time of fish processing. It costs more per gram than bovine, which is reflected in the retail price.

A third source — porcine (pig) collagen — is common in some markets and in gelatine-based products. It is never halal, and it is one reason unlabelled "collagen" or "hydrolysed gelatine" ingredients should be treated with caution.

Type I and III vs type II — what the numbers mean

Collagen types describe where the protein occurs in the body. Type I is the dominant collagen in skin, hair, nails, bones and tendons. Type III occurs alongside type I in skin and blood vessels. Type II is cartilage collagen, usually sourced from chicken sternum rather than bovine or marine material.

Marine collagen is almost pure type I. Bovine supplies types I and III together. For the skin, hair and nails use-case that drives most collagen purchases, both provide type I — the difference is not as decisive as marketing suggests.

The absorption claim — handled honestly

Marine collagen is widely marketed as having superior absorption due to smaller peptide size. There is some laboratory support for marine peptides having lower average molecular weight, but well-hydrolysed bovine peptides are also readily absorbed, and no authorised health claim exists for collagen of any type in the UK or EU. Any product telling you its collagen "boosts skin elasticity" is making a claim UK regulation does not permit. What a good product can do is declare its collagen source, its hydrolysation, its dose per serving, and the vitamin C content — vitamin C being the ingredient that actually carries the authorised claim, contributing to normal collagen formation.

The halal position

Marine collagen is generally considered halal by default — fish does not require ritual slaughter in mainstream Islamic jurisprudence, making fish-derived collagen permissible for the large majority of scholars and certification bodies.

Bovine collagen is conditionally halal — only if the cattle were slaughtered according to Islamic requirements. Most mass-market bovine collagen makes no such assurance. Unless a bovine product carries formal halal certification, its status is doubtful. We cover the full rulings in our guide to whether collagen is halal in Islam.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose marine if halal status matters to you, if you avoid beef products, or if you want the type I-focused option for skin, hair and nails.
  • Choose bovine only with formal halal certification if you need halal assurance — or freely if you don't, and want the lower price per gram.
  • Choose neither if you are vegetarian or vegan — no true collagen is plant-derived. Our guide to plant-based collagen alternatives covers what actually supports the body's own collagen formation instead.

Our Marine Collagen Complex drink mix provides 9g of marine collagen per serving. For the full UK market comparison — doses, formats and prices across the main brands — see our best marine collagen supplement UK guide.

Questions we get asked

Is marine collagen halal?

Fish-derived collagen is considered halal by the large majority of scholars, since fish requires no ritual slaughter. Check the rest of the ingredient list — capsule shells, flavourings and carriers — rather than the collagen itself.

Can you combine bovine and marine collagen?

There is no interaction concern — both are hydrolysed proteins digested like any other. Whether it is worth doing is another matter: both supply type I peptides, so combining them mostly duplicates rather than complements.

Does collagen work at all?

No collagen health claim is authorised in the UK or EU, so no UK seller can legally tell you it improves skin, joints or hair. The published research on hydrolysed collagen peptides is genuinely interesting but was not sufficient for an authorised claim. The one authorised claim in this area belongs to vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation — which is why well-formulated collagen products include it.
