Liposomal vitamin C is one of the fastest-growing premium supplement categories in the UK, typically costing 3–5 times more than standard ascorbic acid tablets. The claim is superior absorption and bioavailability. Is that claim supported by evidence, and does the absorption difference actually translate into better outcomes?
How standard vitamin C absorption works — and its limits
Vitamin C is absorbed in the small intestine via sodium-dependent transporters (SVCT1 and SVCT2). These transporters have a ceiling. Research established that maximum plasma vitamin C from oral supplementation is approximately 220 µmol/L regardless of dose above 200mg. Beyond this saturation point, additional oral vitamin C is not absorbed — it is excreted.
What liposomal delivery changes
Liposomal vitamin C encapsulates ascorbic acid inside phospholipid spheres absorbed via endocytosis rather than the SVCT transporters, bypassing the saturation ceiling. A pharmacokinetic study found liposomal vitamin C achieved significantly higher plasma concentrations than equivalent doses of standard ascorbic acid, approaching those of intravenous infusion at equivalent oral doses.
The co-factors advantage
When is liposomal worth the premium?
- Higher dose needs: Anyone supplementing 500mg+ daily gets meaningfully more absorbed via liposomal
- Digestive sensitivity: People with IBS or acid reflux who experience stomach upset from ascorbic acid
- During illness: Infection and intense exercise dramatically increase vitamin C utilisation
- Immune-focused supplementation: When you want peak circulating levels for seasonal immune support
When standard vitamin C is adequate
At doses of 200mg or below, standard ascorbic acid and liposomal produce essentially identical plasma concentrations. If you take a 200mg supplement daily with no digestive issues, you are not underserved by the standard format.
Format comparison

| Absorption at 500mg+ | Partial ✗ | Higher ✓ |
| Stomach tolerance | Can irritate ✗ | Gentle ✓ |
| Cost | Low ✓ | 3–5x higher ✗ |

Food supplements should not replace a varied diet. Vitamin C above 1,000mg daily is not recommended for extended periods without medical supervision. Consult your GP if managing kidney conditions.
