Quick answer: yes, psyllium husk is halal. It is the outer husk of the seed of the Plantago ovata plant, known in South Asian households as isabgol (or sat isabgol). It is a plant, it is not intoxicating, and plain husk involves no animal ingredients. What can make a psyllium supplement questionable is what is added to it: gelatine capsules, flavourings carried in alcohol, colours, and other ingredients in a blend. A product with halal approval answers all of those at once.
Isabgol and psyllium: the same thing
Many of our customers grew up with a tin of isabgol in the kitchen cupboard, stirred into water or milk the way their mothers and grandmothers did. In UK shops the same husk is sold as "psyllium husk" or "ispaghula husk". The plant is the same; only the name changes.
The four things that decide whether a psyllium product is halal
1. Powder or capsule?
Loose husk or powder is the simplest. Capsules are where problems start: many are gelatine, usually from pork or non-halal beef unless stated. Look for HPMC or "vegetable cellulose" capsules. See our guide to gelatine vs HPMC capsules.
2. Flavourings and sweeteners
Flavoured fibre drinks (orange, lemon, berry) can use flavourings carried in alcohol (ethanol). The ingredient list often just says "flavouring". Unflavoured husk avoids this, as does a product whose flavour comes from whole herbs, such as peppermint leaf.
3. Colours
Some coloured fibre drinks use carmine (E120), from insects. Scholars and certifiers differ on it. Our E-numbers guide lists what to look for.
4. Blends
Psyllium is often sold in blends with other fibres, probiotics or herbs. Each extra ingredient is something else to check, which is why halal approval of the finished product matters more for blends than for plain husk. Our guide on what halal certification means explains what to look for.
Does psyllium husk help with weight loss?
This is the question we are asked most, so here is the honest answer. Psyllium (isabgol) has a long traditional use for digestion, and it is a useful way to add fibre. But it has no authorised weight loss claim in the UK. The fibre that does is glucomannan, from konjac root: glucomannan, in the context of an energy-restricted diet, contributes to weight loss, at 3g a day in three 1g doses with 1 to 2 glasses of water before meals. You can check any claim on the GB nutrition and health claims register. We look at that in isabgol for weight loss: an honest guide, and at glucomannan's halal status in is glucomannan halal?
Using isabgol safely
Risk of choking for people with swallowing difficulties, or when taken with too little fluid. Mix with plenty of water, drink straight away, and never take the husk dry.
- Take it more than an hour before or after other medicines, as the NHS advises for ispaghula husk.
- Not right before bed: the NHS suggests at least an hour before sleep.
- In Ramadan, fibre needs extra thought because your drinking window is short. See our Ramadan fibre routine.
Our psyllium blend
BioSlim combines psyllium whole husks with glucomannan (1.05g per 5g serving), sugar beet fibre, inulin, live cultures, and fennel, peppermint and ginger for flavour. No flavourings carried in alcohol, no colours, no capsule. It is halal approved, kosher approved and vegan. Sugar beet fibre contributes to an increase in faecal bulk. It may contain traces of mustard and sesame.
Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Is psyllium husk halal?
Yes. It is a plant seed husk and contains no animal ingredients. Check capsules (gelatine), flavourings (alcohol carriers) and colours (carmine), or choose a halal approved product.
Is isabgol the same as psyllium husk?
Yes. Isabgol is the South Asian name for psyllium husk, from the Plantago ovata plant. It is also sold as ispaghula husk.
Are psyllium capsules halal?
Only if the capsule is plant-based (HPMC) or made from halal gelatine. Many capsules are pork or non-halal beef gelatine.
Can I take isabgol while fasting?
Only in your eating window, with plenty of water. Taking fibre without enough fluid can be uncomfortable or unsafe. See our Ramadan fibre routine.
Does isabgol help you lose weight?
Psyllium has no authorised weight loss claim in the UK. Glucomannan does, within an energy-restricted diet, at 3g a day in three 1g doses with water before meals.
