Does Wild Yam Contain Progesterone? The “Natural Progesterone” Myth Explained

Wild yam and red clover women's supplement UK – BioFem by BioBodyBoost

Short answer

No. Wild yam does not contain progesterone, and there is no evidence that the human body can turn it into progesterone. Wild yam contains a plant compound called diosgenin, which factories can use as a starting material to make progesterone in a lab. That is where the “natural progesterone” idea comes from. Wild yam is a traditional herb, not a hormone, and it is not a substitute for HRT.

What is wild yam?

Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) is a climbing plant native to North America. Its root has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, including for women’s health. It is a different plant from the yams sold as vegetables in UK supermarkets and markets.

Where does the “natural progesterone” claim come from?

In the 1940s, chemists discovered that diosgenin from Dioscorea yams could be chemically converted into progesterone. This became an important industrial route for making steroid hormones. The progesterone in some pharmacy products today may have started life as plant diosgenin — but only after several steps of laboratory chemistry.

Over time, marketing shortened this story to “wild yam = natural progesterone”. The missing step is that your body cannot carry out that chemistry. As Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center puts it in its wild yam professional monograph, there is “no evidence that the human body can convert diosgenin into progesterone”.

What does the research show?

  • Wild yam cream: In a placebo-controlled trial in women with menopausal symptoms (Komesaroff and colleagues, 2001, Climacteric), a wild yam cream applied for three months made no meaningful difference to symptoms compared with placebo, and did not change hormone levels.
  • “Progesterone creams”: Some creams sold with wild yam on the label have had progesterone added in manufacture. In that case, any hormone in the product comes from the added progesterone, not from the yam. In the UK, progesterone is a prescription-only medicine.
  • Animal and lab studies: Some early studies suggest diosgenin has weak hormone-like activity in animals or cells. This has not been shown to translate into effects in women.

So why is wild yam in women’s supplements?

Wild yam is included in many women’s blends because of its traditional use in herbal practice. That is a different category from a proven effect, and an honest label will not claim it acts like a hormone. In a well-formulated product, the regulator-approved claims come from the vitamins and minerals, for example:

  • Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity.
  • Vitamin B6 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction.

Who should be careful with wild yam?

  • Anyone with a hormone-sensitive condition (such as breast, ovarian or uterine cancer, endometriosis or fibroids) — speak to your doctor first.
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Anyone taking HRT, the contraceptive pill or other hormone medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Is wild yam a natural form of progesterone?

No. It contains diosgenin, which can be made into progesterone in a laboratory, but the body cannot do this conversion.

Does wild yam cream work for menopause?

The best-known controlled trial found wild yam cream worked no better than placebo for menopausal symptoms. If a cream does contain progesterone, it has been added during manufacture.

Is wild yam the same as the yam I buy at the market?

No. Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) is a different species from the yams commonly cooked as vegetables.

Is wild yam halal?

Wild yam is a plant, so it is halal in itself. In a supplement, check the capsule shell and other ingredients, and look for a halal approval on the product.

Can I take wild yam with HRT?

Speak to your GP or pharmacist before combining any herbal product with HRT or other hormone medicines.
