Most probiotic supplements fail before they reach your gut. The stomach is an acidic environment with a pH between 1.5 and 3.5. Freeze-dried bacteria that aren't acid-tolerant — which is most budget probiotics — die in transit. By the time the capsule dissolves, the bacterial count on the label has become largely irrelevant. BioTic 4 Billion uses eight specifically selected acid-tolerant and bile-tolerant strains because the most important metric isn't the number on the label — it's how many bacteria actually arrive in the large intestine where they do their work.
Why Probiotic Strain Selection Matters More Than CFU Count
The UK probiotic market is dominated by products competing on CFU count: 10 billion, 20 billion, 50 billion. These numbers assume every bacterium survives gastric transit and colonises effectively — an assumption that requires acid-tolerant strains, bile-tolerant strains, and appropriate encapsulation. A product with 4 billion acid-tolerant CFU will outperform a product with 20 billion acid-sensitive ones in terms of gut colonisation.
BioTic 4 Billion's eight strains include both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species — the two primary genera with the strongest clinical evidence for digestive health, immune modulation, and gut microbiome balance. Research consistently demonstrates that multi-strain probiotics outperform single-strain products for gut microbiome diversity outcomes.
Why Competitors Fall Short
Optibac Everyday — good quality but not halal. Optibac is one of the best-regarded UK probiotic brands with genuine acid-tolerant strains and transparent labelling. But it's not halal certified and uses gelatine-derived capsules. BioTic 4 Billion is fully halal approved with HPMC plant capsules throughout.
Bio-Kult — 14 strains, not halal, contains milk traces. Bio-Kult is a well-established multi-strain probiotic with a strong clinical track record. But it contains traces of milk in the formulation (relevant for dairy allergies) and is not halal certified. BioTic 4 Billion is dairy-free, vegan, halal and kosher.
Holland & Barrett Probiotics — variable quality, not halal. H&B's own-brand probiotics vary significantly in quality and strain selection. Most use standard strains without specific acid-tolerance data. Not halal certified.

How to Take It
Take 1 capsule daily, ideally in the morning with or without food. For post-antibiotic restoration, take at a different time of day from the antibiotic (antibiotics can kill probiotic bacteria if taken simultaneously). For IBS or digestive discomfort, consistent daily use over 4–8 weeks produces the most meaningful microbiome changes.
For comprehensive gut health, stack with MagneBowel — magnesium supports bowel motility while BioTic provides the live culture microbiome support. For Saccharomyces boulardii-specific yeast probiotic support (particularly during or after antibiotic use or travel), SaccharoMyTum is a complementary yeast-based probiotic with a different mechanism of action.
Is This You?
- You've recently taken antibiotics and want to restore your gut microbiome diversity
- You experience bloating, irregular digestion, or gut discomfort and want structured probiotic support
- You need a halal certified probiotic with vegan capsules — Optibac and Bio-Kult both use gelatine
- You're dairy-free and need a probiotic with no milk traces (Bio-Kult contains traces of milk)
- You want an 8-strain formula that covers both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species for broad gut coverage

Questions We Get Asked
Why does acid tolerance matter?
Stomach acid has a pH of 1.5–3.5 — acidic enough to kill most bacteria. Probiotics that aren't acid-tolerant die before reaching the large intestine, where the majority of microbiome activity takes place. Acid-tolerant strains have evolved mechanisms to survive low pH environments and arrive in the gut intact. This is why the CFU number on a label is less meaningful than the survival characteristics of the specific strains used.
Should I take this during or after a course of antibiotics?
After is safer — antibiotics kill both harmful bacteria and probiotic bacteria, so taking probiotics during antibiotic treatment reduces their effectiveness. Complete the antibiotic course, then start probiotics. Some evidence supports taking probiotics 2–3 hours after antibiotic doses to reduce but not eliminate the interaction, though the most consistent benefit is seen with post-course use. For antibiotic-related diarrhoea specifically, SaccharoMyTum (Saccharomyces boulardii) is a yeast-based probiotic that is not killed by antibiotics and can be taken concurrently.
Is this halal certified?
Yes — fully. The bacterial strains, the growth media, the capsule (HPMC — no gelatine) and the manufacturing facility are all halal and kosher certified. Optibac Everyday uses gelatine capsules. Bio-Kult uses gelatine and contains milk traces. BioTic 4 Billion was formulated for full dietary compliance throughout.
Food supplements should not replace a varied diet or healthy lifestyle. Consult your GP before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, immunocompromised, or managing a diagnosed health condition.
