Beetroot juice became a staple of elite athletics training after a 2009 study showed cyclists reduced their oxygen cost during moderate-intensity exercise by around 19% following six days of supplementation. Since then, the natural nitrate content of beetroot has been the most studied dietary nitrate in sports nutrition, with research consistently showing improved exercise economy in sub-elite athletes and recreational exercisers. Red Punch combines concentrated beetroot extract with Montmorency tart cherry — the most extensively researched botanical for post-exercise muscle soreness — plus turmeric, vitamin B6 and complementary antioxidants in a convenient capsule that delivers the nutritional equivalent of beetroot shots and cherry juice without the sugar, refrigeration or daily messy prep.
Two of the Best-Researched Sports Botanicals, Combined
Beetroot nitrates and Montmorency cherry anthocyanins work through different mechanisms. Nitrates convert to nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and improves oxygen delivery to muscles during exercise. Cherry anthocyanins are anti-inflammatory antioxidants that reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress and accelerate muscle recovery between sessions. Neither replaces the other — they address different points in the exercise-recovery cycle. Combining them in a single daily capsule provides both the performance support (before/during) and recovery acceleration (after) in one supplement.
The original University of Exeter nitrate study found that beetroot juice reduced the oxygen cost of exercise by up to 19% — establishing the research basis for dietary nitrate supplementation that has been confirmed and extended across dozens of subsequent trials.
Why Competitors Fall Short
Beet It Sport Shots — no cherry, no B6, expensive, requires refrigeration. Beet It is the original beetroot shot brand used in clinical research. Effective, but a single-mechanism product — no Montmorency cherry for recovery, no B6 energy claim, and at £29.99 for a box of 15 shots, far more expensive per dose than Red Punch capsules. Requires refrigeration and delivers significant natural sugars alongside the nitrates.
Healthspan Montmorency Cherry — cherry only, no beetroot, not halal. A good single-botanical cherry extract supplement but without the nitrate performance mechanism. Not halal certified. Red Punch provides both botanicals alongside the EU-authorised B6 energy claims.
Amazon Basics Beetroot — beetroot only, no cherry, no herbs, not certified. Generic single-ingredient beetroot capsules without the Montmorency cherry, turmeric, B6, or any certification. No halal status, no kosher, no transparency about standardisation.

How to Take It
Take 1–2 capsules with water. For exercise performance, take 1–2 capsules 60–90 minutes before training — this allows time for nitrate conversion to nitric oxide via salivary bacteria. For recovery, take 1–2 capsules post-workout with food. For consistent antioxidant and recovery support, take daily regardless of training days.
Stack with L-Glutamine Boost for additional gut lining and muscle recovery support post-exercise. For cardiovascular omega-3 support alongside the nitrate mechanism, pair with OmegaBalance.
Is This You?
- You want the beetroot nitrate performance mechanism and the cherry anthocyanin recovery mechanism in one capsule rather than buying both separately
- You're a recreational or competitive athlete who wants sports nutrition that's clean, halal certified, and backed by published research
- You've used beetroot shots but want the convenience and cost savings of a capsule format without the sugar or refrigeration
- You do high-intensity training or cardio and experience significant post-exercise soreness that delays your next session

Questions We Get Asked
Why is Montmorency cherry specifically used rather than regular cherry?
Montmorency (sour) cherry has a significantly higher anthocyanin content than sweet cherry varieties like Bing or Maraschino. Anthocyanins are the polyphenol antioxidants responsible for the anti-inflammatory and recovery effects studied in the sports science literature. The research base specifically uses Montmorency extract — not generic cherry powder — because the anthocyanin concentration is 2–5 times higher. Using a generic cherry powder would require much higher doses to deliver equivalent anthocyanin content.
Does beetroot stain teeth or turn urine red?
Beetroot extract in capsule form bypasses the oral cavity, so there's no tooth staining. Beetroot contains betalains (the red pigment) which are partially absorbed and excreted in urine, which can turn pink or red in some people — this is called beeturia and is harmless. It occurs in 10–15% of people and is related to gut pH and iron absorption efficiency, not the amount of beetroot consumed. Cherry anthocyanins don't cause urine discolouration.
Is this WADA-compliant for competitive athletes?
Beetroot extract, Montmorency cherry, turmeric and B vitamins are all natural food compounds not on the WADA prohibited substances list. However, if you compete in a tested sport, always check with your governing body. For peace of mind, choose a product that is Informed Sport or NSF Certified for Sport — Red Punch doesn't currently carry these certifications. Natural botanical supplements carry a theoretical contamination risk in supplement manufacturing, so tested athletes typically prefer batch-tested certified products.
Can I take Red Punch alongside Creatine or BCAA?
Yes — Red Punch is well-suited to stacking with other sports nutrition products. It operates through different mechanisms: beetroot via nitric oxide for vascular performance, cherry via antioxidant recovery. Creatine Monohydrate increases phosphocreatine for short-burst power, and BCAA Drink Mix provides leucine for muscle protein synthesis. These all work through distinct pathways with no interactions.
Food supplements should not replace a varied diet or healthy lifestyle. Consult your GP before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, taking blood pressure medication (nitrates can have vasodilatory effects), or managing a cardiovascular condition.
