Functional mushrooms have long histories of culinary and traditional use, and each species has its own composition. Below is what each one is and where it comes from — not what it will do for you. No health claims are authorised for these botanicals in the UK, so we describe them rather than promise outcomes.
Hericium erinaceus. A distinctive white, shaggy mushroom used in East Asian cooking and traditional practice. Contains hericenones and erinacines, compounds that are an active area of ongoing research.
Ganoderma lucidum. Known as lingzhi, with a documented history in Chinese and Japanese traditional use going back around two thousand years. Contains beta-glucans and triterpenes.
Inonotus obliquus. A birch-dwelling fungus traditionally used across Siberia and Northern Europe, usually as a brewed drink. Naturally rich in polyphenols and melanin.
Lentinula edodes. One of the most widely cultivated edible mushrooms in the world and a staple of Japanese cuisine. A natural source of the beta-glucan lentinan.
Grifola frondosa. Known as hen of the woods, prized as a culinary mushroom in Japan and increasingly foraged in Europe. Contains characteristic beta-glucan fractions.
Astragalus membranaceus. Not a mushroom but a root, included because it has been paired with mushroom preparations in traditional Chinese practice for centuries. Contains polysaccharides and saponins.
Trametes versicolor. A common bracket fungus found on dead wood across the UK, named for its banded, fan-shaped appearance. Contains the polysaccharides PSK and PSP.
All seven use whole fruiting body extracts rather than mycelium grown on grain. Mycelium-on-grain products carry a substantial proportion of residual starch from the growing substrate; fruiting bodies do not.
This is the one specification that genuinely separates mushroom supplements, and it is rarely stated plainly on a label.
A mushroom's fruiting body is the part you would recognise as a mushroom. Mycelium is the root-like network it grows from. Many supplements are produced by growing mycelium on a grain substrate — usually rice or oats — and then milling the whole thing, grain included. That is cheaper and faster, but a meaningful share of the finished powder is starch from the substrate rather than mushroom.
If a label says "mycelial biomass", "full spectrum" or lists a grain in the ingredients, it is likely a mycelium-on-grain product. If it says "fruiting body" or "extract", it is not. Ours are fruiting bodies. That is a compositional fact you can check, rather than a benefit you have to take on trust.

Functional mushrooms are an active research area, but in the UK no health claims are currently authorised for any of the seven species in this formula. Botanical claims remain "on hold" pending assessment, which means brands are not permitted to tell you what these mushrooms will do for your health.
You will see plenty of supplement pages citing individual studies anyway — usually small, often in cells or animals rather than people. We have chosen not to, because presenting a study alongside a product implies a claim we are not allowed to make and cannot properly stand behind.
What we can tell you is what is in the capsule: seven organic whole fruiting body extracts, a plant-based HPMC shell, no bovine gelatine, no synthetic fillers. If you want to read the research yourself, PubMed is free and searchable by species name.
What makes this different from other mushroom supplements?
Whole fruiting body extracts rather than mycelium grown on grain, which is predominantly starch from the growing substrate. Seven species rather than one. Organic, halal approved, and a vegan HPMC capsule with no bovine gelatine.
Why does the page not say what the mushrooms do?
Because no health claims are authorised for these botanicals in the UK, and we would rather describe what is in the product than make claims we cannot support. If you see a brand telling you a mushroom treats or improves a condition, that claim is not permitted.
Can I take it alongside other BioBodyBoost products?
Yes. Browse the wider range. If you take prescribed medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are under medical supervision, speak to your healthcare professional before adding any new supplement.
Is it halal and vegan?
It is halal approved and suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The capsule shell is plant-based HPMC.
